What are the causes of hair loss and alopecia?
A range of factors contribute to hair loss. The most likely causes are genes and hormones. However other factors can include: stress, medication, environment/pollution, illness and diet.
Male and Female Pattern Hair Loss
The most common cause of hair loss in men and hair loss in women is Androgenetic Alopecia. This can also be known as Male Pattern Baldness and Female Pattern Baldness.
Why it happens: This condition occurs when testosterone is transformed into the hormone DHT. This causes the hair follicle to gradually become smaller and smaller over time. Consequently, the hair gets smaller and smaller in size. Eventually, the hair becomes so small that it no longer reaches the surface of the scalp. This type of hair loss is not constant, but happens in fits and bursts.
What you will notice: Early stage – an oily and/or itchy scalp, a lot of dandruff and gradual hair loss
Mid term – less hair on the crown
Late stage – no hair on the crown, hair only left on the back and sides of the head
How you can treat it: This kind of hair loss is hereditary. It is not possible to treat this kind of hair loss just once and cure it. However, it is possible to treat hair loss. When used on a regular basis, the right treatment will stimulate hair growth and prevent severe hair loss.
101 Hair & Scalp Tonic and 101 Hair Formula have been developed from Traditional Chinese Medicine. By addressing the causes of blood-dryness and poor nutrition of the hair follicle, these treatments reverse hair loss and promote hair growth.
Alopecia Areata and Alopecia Capitalis Totalis
Alopecia Areata is a condition where hair loss usually occurs suddenly in circular patches on the scalp.
Why it happens: Alopecia Areata occurs when the body's immune system attacks the hair bulb in people with a certain genetic make up. This misdirected immune system response prevents new hair growth. The hair follicles become dormant but do not die so there is always a chance for hair re-growth.
What you will notice: The areas of hair loss are random on the scalp, unlike in Male Pattern Baldness and Female Pattern Baldness where hair loss occurs in a definite sequence.
Alopecia Areata sufferers may experience hair loss on other parts of the body as well as the scalp. Males, females and children can all experience this condition. A small percentage of sufferers go on to experience total hair loss on the scalp and this is referred to as Alopecia Capitalis Totalis.
How you can treat it: Many cases resolve naturally in time. Even if sufferers undergo no treatment, one third of people with Alopecia Areata will regrow all their original hair within six months and half the people within one year.
The rate of recovery for any Alopecia Areata sufferer is quicker with the use of 101 Hair Formula. 101 Hair Tonic and 101 Hair & Scalp Tonic.
